RECOMMENDED
Automatic setup and updates
Install Steam for Linux and sign in. The updater chooses and prepares the game’s compatibility components automatically. There are no compatibility settings to change. On Ubuntu/Debian, missing graphics libraries are installed through the system package manager; confirm its password prompt if asked.
- Extract the ZIP into a writable folder outside your Steam library.
- Open a terminal there and run
sh Update-Awesomever.sh. Python 3 is required. - Accept the release. If Steam asks to install a required component, accept its proposed installation. Sign in when the game downloader asks.
- Use Play Awesomever.desktop to play. Keep Steam open.
The updater verifies the game before activating it. Updates require confirmation and preserve the previous version if they fail. Native Steam is required; Flatpak/Snap Steam and ARM Linux are not supported by this installer. See README.txt for importing an existing original depot.
Manual installation — configure Steam and Proton yourself
These steps are for players who prefer applying the patch themselves. The updater above handles these settings automatically.
- Install native Steam for Linux and sign in. In Library, include Tools, find Proton 10.0 and install it. Let Steam finish downloading its required Steam Linux Runtime too.
- Check that your graphics driver supports 32-bit Vulkan 1.3. On Ubuntu/Debian with Intel or AMD graphics, install the missing libraries with
sudo apt install libvulkan1:i386 mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386. With the proprietary NVIDIA driver, install the 32-bit libraries matching your existing driver branch. - Get the complete original Windows build 3280710 using the Steam console: open the console, then run
download_depot 204300 204301 8206801614553676409. Copy the downloaded folder outside the Steam library. Do not use the native Linux executable or the current Steam build. - Download the manual patch and use Rom Patcher JS to patch the original Awesomenauts.exe. Keep the other game files next to it and save the original executable for future updates.
- In Steam, choose Games → Add a Non-Steam Game → Browse and select your patched Awesomenauts.exe. Open the new shortcut’s Properties → Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select Proton 10.0.
- In the shortcut’s Launch Options, enter
SteamAppId=204300 SteamGameId=204300 STEAM_COMPAT_APP_ID=204300 %command%. Keep Start In set to the folder containing the executable. - Launch this shortcut from Steam and allow its first-run preparation to finish. For future patches, close the game and patch your saved original executable again.
Use the Steam account that owns the game. Steam supplies the compatibility components; do not download Windows DLLs from third-party websites. This manual path uses a separate Steam compatibility prefix from the automatic installer.
